Improved grades, no school suspensions and becoming a “better guy” are just a few of the many things Aerick, 12, links to his relationship with Robert, 30.

Matched for almost three years, Robert and Aerick have a relationship that grows each time they are together. As Aerick says—Robert is “sorta like another me.”

It did not start that way. When Robert first met Aerick, the relationship revolved around homework and learning how to control his behavior. Robert’s encouragement, laid-back mannerisms and “being there” gave Aerick the boost he needed. Last year, the two took tai kwan do lessons, allowing Aerick to practice discipline, patience and respect for others.

Through simple acts of inclusion Robert continues to introduce Aerick to new experiences and possibilities. Aerick’s mother is grateful for the changes she has witnessed in her son. Robert and Aerick routinely exceed the once-a-week requirement, seeing see each other a couple times a week, as well as catching up by phone.

The result—Aerick is happier, more directed and finds a comfort-level with Robert that is truly “brother-like.”
